Glycotex is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering and developing a novel class of drugs intended to accelerate human wound healing and tissue repair in acute and chronic wounds. The Company’s lead product candidate, GLYC-101, is initially being developed for external acute and chronic wounds including burn wounds, traumatic and surgical wounds, diabetic ulcers and venous ulcers. GLYC-101 has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for commercial distribution.
GLYC-101 is currently in a Phase IIa clinical trial in the U.S. for wound healing in healthy volunteers undergoing carbon dioxide laser skin resurfacing. A Phase II clinical trial of GLYC-101 for the treatment of venous ulcers was completed in Australia in May 2006. In this trial, GLYC-101 produced a statistically significant rate of wound area reduction versus combined placebo and standard treatment in patients with chronic venous ulcers. The results of this trial provided proof-of concept and dose-ranging information.
Glycotex’s strategy is to develop therapies that are compatible with existing treatment protocols and generally accepted, best-practice treatments for various wound types. The markets for human wound healing and tissue repair products are large and growing. There are a number of trends that continue to expand the market including the aging of the general population, the increasing rates of obesity, heightened interest by the medical community in advanced dressings, increased pressure by hospitals and healthcare providers to discharge patients earlier and the growth in the incidence and prevalence of diabetes. These dynamics, coupled with Glycotex’s novel technology, provide a strong foundation for growth.
